Some coral calcium companies claim that a calcium to magnesium ratio of 2:1 does not occur naturally anywhere. Is this true?
No. Coral grains contain various amounts of calcium and magnesium, in a broad range of ratios. In fossilized above sea coral, it's true that the ratio of calcium to magnesium is usually around 34:0.6. But in Okinawa Marine Coral, there is broad variance. We have been collecting coral grains from the ocean floor for four decades. In that time, we have found areas where, because of environmental and climatologic conditions unique to Okinawa, coral grains contain around 20% calcium and 10% magnesium—a ratio of 2:1.
